Who tends to get tipped
Advice for clients, from consumer sites and etiquette guides, follows a fairly consistent pattern:
Tips are more common
- One-time deep cleans and move-outs
- Cleaners employed by a company or agency
- The holidays
- A job that went well beyond the plan
Tips are less expected
- An owner-operator on a recurring schedule
- A price that already includes gratuity
- An app that adds gratuity at checkout
- A client who shows thanks with reviews or referrals
That means a solo cleaner with mostly recurring homes may go weeks without a tip. That isn't a sign the work is poor.
Price as if no one tips
Build your price from your own minutes, travel and target hourly rate, so it works with zero tips:
In our house cleaning startup guide, 2.5 hours on site plus 30 minutes of travel at $45 an hour, with $6 of supplies, comes to $141, rounded to $145. A tip on top is a bonus, not part of the plan. Our guide to how much to charge for house cleaning shows how to check your real $/hour on each home.
Should you ask for tips or send a tip link?
Be careful. A widely shared post on X this year came from a homeowner who paid $420 for a three-hour move-in clean and then received a link asking for a tip. Many people replied that it felt like too much after a price that size.
- Don't prompt on every invoice. If your payment app adds a tip line, keep it optional, with no preset percentages.
- Never raise tips while quoting. The quote is the price.
- Ask for something better. A review or a referral brings in the next client; a tip doesn't.
Text after a clean the client was happy with
"Thanks again for having us, Sam. If you were happy with today, a quick Google review would really help a small business like mine. Here's the link: [link]"
Holiday tips and gifts
Etiquette guides commonly suggest a year-end tip for a regular cleaner, often up to the cost of one regular clean, and some clients give a card or small gift instead. Accept it warmly and send a short thank-you. Don't change your service based on who tips.
December is also when clients buy gifts for other people. The Cleaning Business Holiday Promo Kit has fillable gift certificates, a holiday flyer and a holiday schedule notice for clients.

Tips on a team
Once you have helpers, tips need rules, written down before the first one arrives:
- Who gets a tip left for "the team": split evenly, or by hours worked on that job
- When card and app tips are paid out, and that they go through payroll for employees
- That a tip for a job one person did alone goes to that person
- In the US, federal law doesn't allow employers, including managers and supervisors, to keep employees' tips. Check your state or provincial rules too.
Tips are income
Texts that matter more than tips
Should you text clients when you're on your way? Yes.
Someone is about to let themselves into the client's home, and a short message makes that feel professional rather than surprising. Four texts cover most visits:
The day before
Your arrival window and anything the client should do, such as clearing counters or putting pets away.
On my way
Your name or business name, an arrival time and how to reach you.
Running late
Sent before you're late, with a new time. Never after.
All done
What was cleaned, anything you couldn't do and why, and that the door is locked.
From your business number
"Hi Sam, it's Jess from Bright Home Cleaning. I'm on my way and should be there by 9:40. Text this number if anything changes."
For the all-done text, a photo of the ticked checklist shows exactly what the visit covered. Only take photos inside a client's home if they've agreed.

Free room-by-room cleaning checklists
Standard, deep clean and move-in/move-out checklists with a client-initials line, to leave behind or photograph for the all-done text.

Should I expect tips from recurring clients?
No. Plan as if they won't tip.
Etiquette guides generally treat tipping an owner who sets their own price as optional, and many recurring clients show thanks with a holiday tip, a review or a referral instead. If your income only works with tips, the price needs to change.
Should I add a tip line to my invoices?
If your booking or payment app adds one automatically, keep it optional and neutral, with no preset percentages that feel like pressure. Many owner-operators leave it off and ask happy clients for a review instead, which brings in new clients.
Do I have to share tips with my team?
If you have employees in the US, federal law doesn't allow employers, including managers and supervisors, to keep employees' tips. Decide in writing how tips are split and when they're paid out, and check your state or provincial rules too. Tips for a job a helper did alone should reach that helper.
Do I have to report cash tips?
Yes. In the US, the IRS treats tips as taxable income, and in Canada the CRA does too. As a self-employed cleaner, record cash and app tips with your business income on the day you get them.
What should an on-my-way text say?
Your name or business name, roughly when you'll arrive, and how to reach you. For example: "Hi Sam, it's Jess from Bright Home Cleaning. I'm on my way and should be there by 9:40." Send it from the same number every time so clients recognize it.
